Malindi Airstrip
Location: The Airport is 2.5 Km west of Malindi Town. It
is by the Mombasa road on it's southern side, where the
access road is connected. Eastwards the suburbs of
Malindi are developing in the proximity of the Airport
boundary. In particular two schools are located along the
Eastern boundary fence. Westwards some land is used
for a coconut plantation.
Facilities: The current primary runway is 1,402 metres
long and 30 metres wide. It's magnetic orientation is
171/351 and it's runway designation is 17/35. it is
classified 3C by the ICAO code.
The secondary runway is 1,128 metres long g and 20
metres wide. It's magnetic orientation is 81 / 261 and it's
runway designation 08/26. It is classified as 1B by the
ICAO code.
The two runways are secant with a right angle o
thresholds 26 and 25 with an L-shape.
The apron area is about 4,500 metres square and can
accommodate two aircraft of F-50 type.
The secondary runway is linked with the apron by one
liaison taxiway 15 metres wide.
Terminal: The passenger terminal building is a single
storey of a total area of 300 metres square. It is
composed of three main parts;
- A terminal part consisting of a common arrival /
departure hall including a bar ,a cafeteria, ticketing
office , a check-in weighing desk, and an
embarkation lounge.
- An office block for the airport staff.
- A private VIP lounge is located on the apron side
near a small garden.
Other facilities:
The airport has adequate Navigational aids.
The control tower and the ATC block are located to the
west of the terminal. This is a two storey building with a
visual control room on the upper floor.
The Airport is equipped with a synoptic meteorological
station installed behind the fire station.
The present fuel farm located at the western side of the
apron has a storage capacity of 15 cubic metres of AV
-GAS and 35 cubic metres of JET-A1.
Potential: A need has been expressed to elevate Malindi
Airport to international status so that it can receive direct
flights from Europe in particular from Italy.
The management of Kenya airports Authority is
considering undertaking major improvement works at the
airport. These will improve the handling capacity of the
airport
Manda Airstrip

Location: The airstrip is located on the Western side of
Manda island separated from Lamu island by a sea
channel, 800 metres wide. The only access to the site is
the seaway and this separation gives it it's uniqueness.
From Lamu passengers are directed by boat to the jetty
on Manda island and reach the airstrip by a footpath
leading to the apron edge.
Facilities: There are two runways.
The primary runway is 1,300 metres long and is linked
with the apron by one taxiway. Its designation is 16/34.
The secondary runway is 900 metres long with
designation is 08/26.
The apron is about 6,500 metres square and can
accommodate 4 aircraft of DHC6 type.
There is a thatch shelter that serves basic passenger
needs
Ukunda Airstrip

Location: The airstrip is located at less than one kilometre
to the East of Ukunda township, and 30 kilometres to the
South of Mombasa. It is linked by the A14 high-way the
main road from Mombasa to Tanzania passing through the
Likoni ferry.
Facilities: The current runway is 1,100 metres long and 20
metres wide. It's magnetic orientation is 01/19. It is
classified as a class 1B with ICAO code.
It is linked to the apron by two short cross taxiways of 10
metres width.
The apron area is located near the runway threshold 01. It
has an area of about 5,000 metres square, and can
accommodate 3 DHC6 aircraft simultaneously.
Terminal facilities:
An existing building of about 150 square metres is
currently being used as an airport service building,
accommodating passenger's documentation formalities
and some offices. The building is supplied from the public
water network general amenities at not very good.
There are no ATC facilities as well as no navigational
facilities.
Potential: The airstrip is very important as it serves the
South Coast based hotels.
