Diani Brief History
The coastal stretch of Diani where Ukunda Airstrip is located some 20 miles south of Mombasa is a world renown tourist resort .There are nearly 20 hotels along a five miles stretch of coastline and more are being built, more than 20 restaurants offering every kind of cuisine, home-from home cottage complexes’several night clubs, a golf course two hospitals, and severals clinics, animal, child and health many tourists attractions, including a local game reserve.
Diani beach road was built in the 60s, just a marrum track which followed the power line. Many of the properties were bisected by the road, so many people had part of their properties land in what is now termed the second row. The old road to Ukunda used to pass where the Airstrip now is ,past a huge old baobab tree .The late President Kenyatta made the tree a national monument but sad to say it came down in heavy rains a few years ago. This is a place where he used to go and relax sometimes in the afternoons.
