The airport was started in 1995. It is located some 16
kilometres south from Eldoret Town on the Eldoret -
Kisumu road.

The airport's elevation is 6,838ft (at runway 08) while
transition altitude is 10,000 feet and is open from Monday
to Sunday from 0330hours to 1730hours GMT, but the
hours can be extended on request. It is 6,800 feet above
sea level.

Eldoret International Airport was built with the vision of
achieving accelerated economic growth, through
integration and opening up of the Western region to local
and international markets. The airport is also expected to
promote the exploitation of the rich tourism circuit of
Western Kenya, which is largely unexploited.

The airport has two major revenue generating activity:
aeronautical and non-aeronautical. The emphasis in EIA
revenue is to shift from traditional dependency on aviation
revenue to non-aviation revenues.

Currently the airport has three scheduled international cargo flights and several ad hoc freighters per week. Main cargo entering EIA consists of electronic, textiles, garments, electrical appliances and personal effects. One scheduled passenger aircraft to Nairobi Wilson is available on daily basis.

The local producers can use the airports modern aviation facilities to export fresh produce, which include fresh meat, fruits, flowers and live animals.
